The Navel Show

The Navel Show

1991 – video installation for one monitor

A monitor is sitting on a black, 80-cm-high wooden pedestal, which is standing in the middle of the space. The image on the monitor shows a navel. Every now and then, the viewer sees a hand scratch or stick a finger into the navel. Writing also appears on the screen sometimes. Then the navel (or the monitor? or the video tape? or the video artist? or the television? or the artist herself?) asserts that it is the "center of the world."

The single sequence lasts 18 minutes (one establishing shot, no editing) and infinitely repeats itself.

This installation was on show at "KunstBetrieb Dachau," Dachau, near Munich (along with my video installation "Wooing the Viewer"), a joint exhibition with Barbara Hammann, March 7 - April 8, 1991.
