Push-Up Twins

2005 – two projections on wall

Two men in garishly colored shorts are doing push-ups in opposite directions from one another. They are shown from the side, projected onto the wall at floor level. The viewer hears the sound of their breathing growing heavier and heavier and watches in suspense, wondering which one of them will be able continue with the arduous exercise. As soon as one of them is no longer able to lift his body off the floor, he is relieved by another man.

The relative uniformity of the up-and-down movements seems almost mechanical or reminds one of a teeter-totter or the beating of a butterfly's wings.

In a similar way as in the works “Push-Ups”, “Hercules” and “Bodybuilder”, these life-size, projected juxtapositions remind us of our own bodies.

The Push-Up Twins were first shown publicly on the lower level of the Galerie Gabriele Rivet in Cologne as part of the solo exhibition “Body-Bilder” (Body Images, 2005).
