Angels of the Night

2002 – 4:55 min, SD video, projection onto a wall

Five young blonde women are projected in life-size on the wall. They are standing and looking directly at the viewer, knowing they are also being watched. They fiddle with their clothes, put on make-up, comb their hair, smoke, chew bubble gum, and wait. But wait for whom or for what? A strange tension evolves.

This work is about a transitional stage, about an in-between space, about the uncertain. It remains unclear if the "Angels of the Night" are disco girls or prostitutes. The location of these events is also unclear. The sounds in the video make the viewer think it must be taking place outside somewhere. At night. The viewer suddenly hears a car come roaring up, then screeching tires and the rumbling of disco music. The young women are delighted and hurry out of the picture. Doors slam. The car takes off. Everything starts all over again: the women enter the picture from the left, as though they were taking stage, and then they wait ...

This work premiered in the "Face to Face" exhibition at Galerie Gabriele Rivet Köln (Cologne) from October 30 - December 21, 2002.
