The photo series "Protection" is an ongoing project. The project started in Bangkok in 2018, where I noticed the intense colored protective clothing and face masks of the construction workers and street vendors. I am interested in the relationship between individual design and conformity, between the creation of variants within a more or less limited canon.
Similar to the construction workers and street vendors in Thailand, the skiers and snowboarders shown here protect themselves with mostly brightly coloured clothes, helmets, glasses, scarves and masks against injuries and sun, but also against coldness, wind and snow. And they do it as part of their leisure sports, creating a kind of fashionable, futuristic look.
The portrait series was created at the beginning of March 2020 on the Pitztal glacier in the Austrian Tyrol. The Covid 19 pandemic still seemed far away, although it was already raging violently in Italy very close by. A few days later the "shutdown" also took place in Austria and Germany. This gave the portrait series an additional connotation. For decades we in Europe have been discussing whether one may cover his head and face in public for religious reasons. Now we ear masks to protect ourselves from a virus infection.
